A Message from John D. Protasiewicz

Chair of the Chemistry Department
Case Western Reserve University

Dear Prospective Student,

Thank you for visiting our website.  Here you will find information about our graduate programs and all of our outstanding opportunities for your future education and career.  Choosing a school for your graduate studies in chemistry is one of the most important decisions you will make, and so I urge you to consider the exciting possibilities at Case Western Reserve University.

A graduate program is judged by several criteria: the excellence of its faculty and curricula, the quality of the facilities and instrumentation, and the success of its alumni in their careers. The graduate program at Case Western Reserve University has a long tradition of excellence in all these areas. Not only are our faculty dedicated to research and teaching, but they also provide a supportive, collegial atmosphere for our graduate students.

The chemical sciences are very extensive at Case Western Reserve University.  Our current research activities go beyond the established areas of chemistry (Organic, Inorganic and Physical) and now include many exciting interdisciplinary areas such as Chemical Biology, Catalysis, Nanoscience, Ultrafast Spectroscopy, Electrochemistry, & Materials Chemistry.  Interactions with the neighboring departments of Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Macromolecular Science, and Pharmacology, provide many other projects, collaborations, and opportunities.  These broad experiences ensure our alumni are well suited and successful for a vast array of careers after graduation.

I feel we have a great deal to offer a student interested in graduate studies in chemistry, and hope that you will give us careful consideration as a dynamic department with research thrusts in rapidly growing areas of chemistry. We encourage you to visit, see our facilities first hand, and meet our faculty. If you wish to do so, or have any other questions about our programs, please feel free to email our graduate program coordinator Kelsey Forester, kelsey.forester@case.edu.

Best wishes for success in your continuing studies.

John D. Protasiewicz, Chair
