The Department of Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University offers a dynamic and cutting-edge educational experience in the chemical sciences. Relationships across disciplines include close collaborations with the departments of Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Macromolecular Science & Engineering, Molecular Biology & Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Physics.

With 20 faculty members and 15 associated faculty, the Department of Chemistry brings together prominent and renowned researchers in Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, Physical, and Theoretical Chemistry; Biochemistry; Polymers; Nanotechnology; and Drug Discovery and Delivery working in areas of Chemical Biology and Energy and Materials.

The Chemistry Department is located in the Agnar Pytte Science Center (see Campus Map). The science center, featuring an award-winning glassed-in atrium that connects three fully renovated buildings, is a state-of-the-art research and teaching complex. The Chemistry and Biology Departments share this complex, which combines modern research labs, teaching labs, lecture halls, classrooms, and offices in an architecturally distinguished space, providing a great place to work. The departments and research centers of the College of Arts and Sciences, Case School of Engineering, and School of Medicine are all conveniently close together on a beautiful urban campus located in University Circle.

Research Facilities

Extensive Chemistry Department research facilities support laboratory experiences as an integral component of the curriculum for both undergraduate and graduate students. Routine and specialized instrumentation across the research groups includes UV-Vis, fluorescence, and circular dichroism spectrophotometers; gas and liquid chromotography; atomic absorption, IR, and Raman spectrometers; mass spectrometers; NMR spectrometers; and ultrafast laser systems. Housed in the Chemistry Instrumentation Facility, research, and teaching laboratories, students are supported and mentored via hands-on learning.  Research Centers located in or affiliated with the Chemistry Department include:

University libraries offer access to considerable science resources, both in print and electronically. Only a few minutes walk from the Chemistry Department, these libraries include Kelvin Smith Library and two locations of the Cleveland Health Sciences Library: Health Center Library and Allen Memorial Medical Library. In addition, the expansive Cleveland Public Library offers an outstanding science collection.

Seminars

The Department of Chemistry sponsors a rich program of seminars on recent advances in chemical research. Most notable are the Frontiers in Chemistry lectures, in which scientists of international distinction lecture on major achievements in chemistry. The department also sponsors a weekly colloquium series, providing invited speakers from a variety of institutions on current research topics. Both programs are addressed to the general audience of students, faculty, and chemical scientists on campus and in the Cleveland area. In addition, the departments and research centers of science, engineering, and medicine offer a broad range of seminars.
